About Our KALMATH

Shri Madiwala Swamigalu

Bharata-khanda is known as the land of saints. India is known as the “spiritual base” of the world. Kannada-nadu is a good example of this saying. Thus, in the past, none of the kings of the deep Kannada land have defied the words of the Swamijis, who raised swords in their court as ‘Raja-Gurus’. The first duty of the Raja-guru was to find solutions to the hardships of the kings and the people of the country.

The contribution of the Rajaguru of Kittur was immense in removing the difficulties of the rulers and ensuring that the administrative machinery ran smoothly. Swamijis were the main contributors to the establishment of the state in Kittur. “Establish your kingdom in Gijaganahalli. Your kingdom will be prosperous”,Swamijicommands. According to Swamiji’s order, Allappa-gowda Desai built a palace and a fort at the place indicated by the Guru and transferred his work area of Sampagaon to Gijaganahalli. That Gijaganahalli is today’s Kittur.

King Allappa said that he would first build a monastery for the Guru’s residence and then build a fort (in 1676) for the abode of the Guru who guided him to build the kingdom. As a result,Chowki-matha comes into existence in Kittur. He gives huge donations from the state to the Guru. Following the principle of “goal should be first, guru should be behind”, the king accepted Gurusiddha-Swamiji as his guru. With the help, cooperation and guidance of guru, he shouldered the burden of the kingdom. He took darshan of Rajaguru daily, received padodaka, prasada and vowed to develop Nadu-Nudi-culture and followed the guidance of guru. All the kings of the kingdom of Kittur obeyed the tradition followed by the king.

Having seen Sri Gurusiddha Swami’s business, vedanta and politics in prosperity, Allappagowda Desai, who had timely advice and guidance, spent the last five years of his life building a Math (in 1688) at a little distance from the palace as a result of his ardent desire to come even closer. That is today’s RajaguruSamsthana,Kalmatha. Then the GurusiddhaSwamijis who were living in Chowkimath started living in the newly constructed Kalmatha. The King continued to develop Kalmatha till the end of his life i.e. 1691. The rulers of Kittur, who believed that the touch of the Guru gave them salvation, ordered their tombs to be built within the premises of the monastery. Allappa-gowdaSardesai, Mudimallappa Desai, Chikkamallappa Desai, ShivanagowdaSardesai, Fakir Rudrasarja, Veerappa Desai, Mallasarja Dore, Shivlingarudra Sarja and others royal tombs can be seen in the premises of RajaguruMatha in Kittur. In no other state or country can we find such a legacy of aramanegurumane tombs. All the mausoleums of the kings are established in the premises of the Guru Math, while all the mausoleums of the Rajagurus are established in the precincts of the original Math, Chaukimath.
Pujyasree Madiwala Swami, who is currently the thirteenth Peethadhiswara of Kalmatha Rajaguru Samsthana, is a post graduate. Lords who are idols of discipline and courtesy are literati themselves. ‘Akkamahadevi’s Vachana Pada Prayoga Kosha’ written by him has attracted the attention of the scholars of the country. Similarly, ‘Basavanna’s Vachana Padaprayoga Kosha’, ‘Jedara Dasimaiah’s Vachana Padaprayoga Kosha’, ‘Basavanna’ and ‘Guru Nanak’ have made their own footprints in the field of literature. Through ‘Kittura Nada Vidyavardhak Sangha’ established in 1950 under the chairmanship of Swamiji of Matha, with school, college, B.Ed training college, ITI college, etc., Swamiji is determined to make Kittur to be fully literate. Shree Gurusiddeshwar Government Preuniversity College is well known and a center for imparting good education to students. Also, it is a matter of great pleasure that Sri-matha has recently given 2 acres of land adjacent to the national highway to the Kittur Development Authority, and the construction of the Rani Channamma Memorial Bhavan is in full swing at that place. Thus, he decided to lead the Sri-matha in the fields of society, religion, education, culture, literature, art etc. With a progressive and ideological background, he became active, and he is leading many more social works.
